How to build a bibliography

A bibliography is the list of sources at the end of your paper. Every style wants the same core facts in a slightly different order, so the trick is to record each source once, then let the tool handle the formatting.

  1. Add each source. Pick the source type, then fill in the title, authors, year, and any publication details you have. Author order matters, so enter them the way they appear on the source.
  2. Pick one style. Switch between APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago, and Harvard. The choice applies to the whole list at once, so you never reformat entries one by one.
  3. Order the list. Reference lists run alphabetically by the first author's surname, so leave auto-sort on. Turn it off if a style or your tutor wants a manual order, then use the up and down buttons.
  4. Export. Copy the formatted list straight into your document, or download BibTeX or RIS to import into a reference manager.

A few formatting habits that save you marks

  • Keep author names consistent. One missing initial can split an author across two entries and break the alphabetical order.
  • Record the year as it appears. Use it as written, and leave it blank only when the source genuinely has no date.
  • Add a DOI when a journal article has one. It is the most stable link a reader can follow, and most styles prefer it over a plain URL.

Need to format a single source first? The citation generator pulls metadata from a URL, DOI, or ISBN. Already have a file of references? The bibliography converter moves them between BibTeX, RIS, CSL JSON, and EndNote XML.
